My daughter Bethany is bright. However, while homeschooling I noticed that she would very quickly forget the basic facts she learned. It turns out, her observation is also supported by research. We retain only a few facts in short-term memory at a time. It takes about six minutes to move these into long-term memory. If the facts don't move to long-term memory then they are gone - forgotten.

Have you ever been introduced to somebody and immediately forgotten their name? Clearly, we can forget within seconds.

Bethany, however, was getting facts into her long-term memory. The problem was, even long-term memories fade. To make her long-term memories last longer she needed to actively recall those memories over extended periods of time, months to years.

To really retain knowledge requires long-term review and follow-up.

We started to do regular follow-up.

If Bethany kept getting a question right, I moved its review further and further into the future. If she got a question wrong, we reviewed it again the next day.

This is the type of review the researchers recommended. They call it active recall and spaced repetition.

I immediately noticed a major improvement. Bethany not only remembered things longer, but it also took a lot less energy to refresh a memory than to learn it in the first place. Refreshing and review could even be fun and efficient!

I also noticed something else very special. The facts she learned gave her the ability to learn even more facts faster. I call this creating "knowledge nets" - nets that help your brain catch more knowledge. For instance, once she really knew that Abraham Lincoln was president from 1861 to 1865, she also knew the time frame of the Civil War. Instantly. Without Studying.

I have to admit that keeping track of what she got right and wrong, and manually adjusting the review cycle, was really time-consuming.
